South Devon - The English Riviera
The South Devon holiday region offers an exotic and yet very English alternative to going abroad. The South Devon coast has resorts which vary from sophisticated to unspoilt, with Victorian and Edwardian influence always apparent. The warm Gulf Stream provides an almost sub-tropical influence and it has among the highest sunshine records in the country.
South Devon, also known as the "South Hams" was designated an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1960. There are five estuaries - the Avon, Erme, Dart, Salcombe-Kingsbridge and Yealm. Along the River Dart from Totnes to Dartmouth and from the Kingsbridge Estuary to Salcombe the countryside is particularly beautiful. There are sixty miles of coastline including part of the South West Coast Path. There are over 4,800 acres designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest including two National Nature Reserves and three Special Areas of Conservation.
